Welcome to college! Congratulations! You are one of the few and fortunate who have this wonderful opportunity!

Since you are in college for only a limited time, you must do all you can to maximize and enjoy your experience. As an avid advocate and supporter of higher education, I am here to make sure that you do just that. Together, we are going to conquer the exciting world of college!

I absolutely loved my college experience! During my twelve-year matriculation through undergraduate and graduate school, I attended one of the largest public universities in the country, The University of Texas at Austin, and I attended a small private Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. During my extensive yet rewarding college experience—I excelled academically, participated in numerous co-curricular activities, traveled the world, and I had fun! Additionally, during my professional career I have worked in higher education—as a staff member, professor, contributing alum, and trustee on the board of trustees. I, therefore, have a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that contribute to student success.

Considering my experience in and passion for college, I have decided to create a blog to assist you in your matriculation. Through this blog I seek to teach you various strategies on how to successfully progress through college as well as how to take advantage of all that college offers. I believe that college is a unique place and space for you to develop all aspects of yourself—your mind, your gifts, your interests and your professional aspirations. As you go through college you will learn so much about yourself, your discipline and the world.

In this blog you can look forward to receiving valuable information. You will have access to multiple resources, useful advice, helpful guidance, virtual college tours, interviews with professors and experts in higher education, and much, much more. In addition to being educational, I plan for this blog to be fun, too.

To ensure that the content remains relevant to your needs, I welcome your suggestions and feedback. Feel free to email me topics or questions that you would like for me to cover. If I do not know the answer, I guarantee you that I will find an expert who does.

So let’s get on with it!

My first piece of advice for you in college: Get your mind right! As soon as you step on the college campus, decide who you want to be, what you want to accomplish and what mindset you will have to maintain to make sure that you achieve all of your goals and aspirations! Because many of you are leaving home for the first time, it may be easy for you to fall into fear, see the wind, question your abilities, or get distracted; therefore, it is important for you to set your intention as soon as you arrive to campus.

Are you going to strive for excellence, or are you going to settle for mediocracy? Are you going to focus on accomplishing your academic, personal and professional goals, or are you going to party all the time? Are you going to live in the moment and enjoy your experience, or are you going to detract into a state of distress and anxiety?

Get your mind right, right now! You are the leader responsible for the direction and rewards of your educational journey. You decide where you want to go and what you will accomplish. So, get your mind right and let’s get moving on one of the most exciting adventures of your life!
